DR. KURT HACKEMER TO SPEAK AT GIBBON HERITAGE CENTER

The Gibbon Heritage Center is pleased to announce a Salute to Veterans on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gibbon Heritage Center. We wish to honor our local veterans for their service to our community and our country.

Special guest speaker for the afternoon will be Dr. Kurt Hackemer from the University of South Dakota. Dr. Hackemer is Professor of History and also serves as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He teaches on military history and has written articles on 19th century American naval and military history.

This being the 150th anniversary of the founding of Gibbon, it seems very appropriate to draw attention to those members of the Soldiers Free Homestead Colony who founded Gibbon. A number of the Colony who arrived in Gibbon on April 7, 1871 were veterans of the Civil War seeking homesteads and a new beginning.

The Gibbon Heritage Center served as a resource for Dr. Hackemer’s research into how those veterans helped to settle colonies in the Northern Plains including Gibbon, and this will be the topic for his talk on November 7.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this event to learn more about our local history and to honor our veterans at this Salute to Service.

The event is finished.
